The design of Light Path and Void, a residential house by George Wang, sets it apart from others in its category. The ceiling motif, painted in white, creates a dialogue with the volume of the space. This continuously framed pattern directs a visual path and softens the presence of a heavy beam traversing over the public zone.
The material and spatial elements of the design are carefully coordinated to avoid visual distractions. Tile bands and wood are used to reduce glare on the polished marble surface in the living room. Despite the demand for a large living space, the design incorporates fine textures and furnishing objects to create a sense of warmth and comfort.
The deployment of artificial lighting in Light Path and Void is highly effective in terms of color rendering and spatial ambiance. Standing light posts and hidden lighting fixtures contribute to a pleasant mood and ambiance at night.
The project for Light Path and Void started in April 2020 and was completed in August 2021 in Kaohsiung. Throughout the design process, the team faced the challenge of creating a house that resembled a small but exquisite gallery. They used double curved lines for the ceiling in the public area to elongate the visual height and hide the beam, resulting in a lighter and more spacious room.
The design of Light Path and Void is truly unique, with large windows inviting picturesque views into the room. The dining room features a herring-bone motif glass panel, while a tea platform overlooks the sea views. The overall vision for this design was to integrate it seamlessly into the site, creating a daily life that feels like a landscape painting.
Light Path and Void was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The design of Light Path and Void showcases strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
